県外に旅行するたび、ちょっと残念に思うことがある。それは旅先の人々の山陰地方に関する知識が出雲大社や松江城、鳥取砂丘など、かなり限られたものであることだ。多くの人は三徳山の断崖絶壁に建つ寺や、奥出雲にある鬼の舌震（したぶるい）のゴツゴツした巨大な岩の峡谷など山陰地方にある素晴らしい場所を知らないようだ。
島根や鳥取にはこの他にもたくさんの隠れた名所があるというのに。ちなみに私が個人的に気に入っている場所の一つは、鬼の舌震からそう遠くないところにある要害山だ。
要害山は、１３０５年に三沢氏が築城した山城の城跡で、現在は石垣や井戸など古い城の名残をわずかに残すのみ。木々に覆われた斜面脇の登山道を歩くと、極めて防御的な地形になっているのに気が付く。あぁ、だからここに城を築いたのか！と一人納得する。とはいえ登山道は近くの船通山や吾妻山のように長くて険しい道ではないので意外と歩きやすい。
頂上までの登りはやや急ではあるが幸いなことに短い。そして頂上にたどり着くと少し息を切らして登ったかいのある見事な眺望が広がっている。山陰地方のいろいろな山に登った私にとって、この要害山の頂上からの景色はこのあたりで５本の指に入るくらいすばらしいと思っている。地平線に沿って広がる広大な中国山地は、冬は特に美しい。もちろんどの季節のパノラマも、少しだけがんばって登ったごほうびに値するすばらしさだ。
数年前、３日間かけて斐伊川沿いを歩く旅をしていた時にたまたま見つけた城跡の標識。ちょっと見てみようと思ったのが幸運にも要害山を知るきっかけだった。このような偶然の発見が、私が山陰を歩き回って探索する楽しみのひとつでもある。次の角を曲がればどんなワクワクが見つかるかわからないのだから。

Whenever I travel to other parts of Japan, it always disappoints me when the locals' knowledge of the Sanin region is limited to just one or two locations, usually Izumo Taisha, Matsue Castle or the Tottori Sand Dunes. Many of them are ignorant of all the other wonderful attractions in our area, such as the dramatic cliffside temple at Mt. Mitoku or the rock-strewn gorge of Oni-no-Shitaburui. Furthermore, there are hundreds of other hidden gems scattered around Shimane and Tottori as well. One of my personal favorites is Mt. Yougai, located not too far from Oni-no-Shitaburui in Okuizumo.
Mt. Yougai was once the site of a formidable mountain castle built by the Mizawa clan in 1305. Only a few vestiges of the castle can be seen today, such as the remains of the stone walls and the old well. However, walking along the trails on the forested slope, one can really get a sense of how the mountain’s topography made it a prime location for a well-defended castle. Furthermore, the trails can be walked with little effort as they aren’t long and strenuous like the ones on the nearby mountains of Mt. Sentsu and Mt. Azuma.
The climb to the summit is a bit steep but fortunately it’s short. Upon reaching the top, the climber is rewarded with a stunning view. As someone who has hiked extensively in the Sanin Region, the mountain vista on Mt. Yougai is one of the best in the area in my opinion. The vast Chugoku Mountain Range stretches out along the horizon and looks particularly lovely in winter. The panorama in any season is a great payoff for the little bit of effort it takes to get to the top.
I was fortunate to discover Mt. Yougai by chance. While on a three-day walk along the length of the Hii River a few years ago, I happened to see a sign for the castle ruins and decided to check it out. That’s one of the reasons exploring the Sanin region on foot is so rewarding. You never know what you might find around the next bend in the road.
